HSE Advisor

Based in Widnes, we are a leading provider of environmental, animal and human health solutions and a key influencer in driving health and sustainability throughout the food chain. Devenish has four manufacturing sites in the UK and four in the United States, from where they supply innovative nutritional solutions and technical expertise to producers through the farm, feed and food industry in the UK, Ireland, Europe, Africa, Middle East, Australasia, Latin America, and the USA.

The Role

Reporting to the Head of Health, Safety and Environmental, the successful candidate will be responsible for leading on the Health, Safety and Environmental initiatives across Widnes as well as supporting the Devenish Group / other sites associated with Devenish Group.


  • Promote a positive proactive culture towards health and safety.
  • Ensure operations are informed of actual or potential breaches of legislation regarding Health Safety and the Environment.
  • Provide input to help drive a process of continuous improvement in respect of HSE.
  • Provide support and advice to operations to ensure that the Devenish procedures, SOP’s and local guidance are fully aligned in order that no conflict or confusion exists.
  • Assist the operations teams to ensure all accidents and incidents are correctly reported and investigated to identify both immediate and root causes.
  • Compile timely and accurate data / KPI’s and produce reports in line with the needs of the reporting requirements.
  • Conduct site inspections and audits on a frequency agreed, agree corrective actions as required and track actions through to completion with the contract operational management teams.
  • Provide advice and support in respect of environmental matters in support of the business unit environmental.
  • Provide support to in respect of internal and external HSE audit plans to assist in certification in respect of safety, quality and environment (ISO 9001 / 14001 and 45001)
  • Collaborate and provide mutual support to other individuals and teams within Devenish.
  • To advise and support the contract management on all EHS issues, promoting accountability and responsibility. Engaging with the operations team to empower ownership.
  • Develop and deliver internal HSE training in support to the operations teams.
  • Assist with the assessment of staff to ensure capacity, capability and competency are maintained.
  • To motivate managers and staff to establish their full contribution to the organisation and to ensure all relationships are collaborative.
  • Ensure a wide range of risk assessments are undertaken and developed to eliminate or reduce risks to the health and safety of employees or other persons. Tasks may include: providing advice and guidance, and ensure that risk assessments (general and specific, such as COSHH, MSDS, new and expectant mothers, first aid, manual handling, DSE, etc.) are completed for all activities with significant risks.
  • Arranging and/or undertaking regular inspections, audits, health surveillance, surveys and tests to assess the standards achieved using, where appropriate, external assistance.
  • Liaising with managers and technical personnel to ensure that health and safety aspects of all new plant, equipment and processes are fully assessed.
  • Ensuring compliance with fire and emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Assistance in the claim management process, with the legal and HR team.

Essential Criteria:

  • NEBOSH / IOSH certification or equivalent
  • Minimum of 3 years (or equivalent) in the same or similar role
  • A good knowledge of Health and Safety legislation
  • Previous experience of carrying out in-depth incident/ accident investigations
  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively across all levels
  • Resilient – works well under pressure
  • Prepared to travel to various sites across GB, NI and RoI as required.
