PhD Researcher

In partnership with University College Dublin, Devenish have a requirement for PhD Researcher to join the Research team, primarily based at The Lands of Dowth, Co. Meath.

Devenish is a farming and food company, delivering innovative nutritional products and solutions for the pig, poultry and ruminant animal feed industry, the food industry and for human health. Headquartered in Belfast, Devenish has 5 manufacturing sites in the UK, as well as United States and Mexico.

The Project

This 48 month PhD project is part of the EU2020 project HeartLand (Health, Environment, Agriculture, Rural development: Training network for LAND management), an Innovative Training Network of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions. The successful candidate will research the impact of sward type (including multispecies swards) and management system on animal performance, animal health and product quality. The Role

A PhD candidate who is familiar with grass-based livestock production systems will engage in a large- scale system experiment to investigate the effect of multispecies swards on animal performance. The research will have the aim to i) explore the effect of grazing multispecies swards on ewe, lamb and beef cattle performance; ii) quantify the effects of the multispecies swards on the enteric methane emissions and parasite burden of the grazing livestock; and iii) investigate the effect of multispecies swards on the quality of the meat produced from the animals in this experiment.

Key responsibilities:
  • Reviewing literature and the writing of scientific papers
  • Executing large-scale systems study and the subsequent laboratory studies of the samples obtained and statistical analysis of the data collected
Essential criteria:
  • Be able and willing to relocate and work Ireland
  • Your 'main activity' has not been in the Republic of Ireland for more than 12 out of the last 36 months (a Marie Curie stipulation)
  • Appropriate degree in agricultural, animal, environmental or other biological science
  • Interest in agricultural ecology and agronomy
  • A keen interest and knowledge of the Ruminant sector
  • Excellent communication skills both verbally and in writing
  • An ability to work on own initiative but also to work collaboratively with others
  • Computer literate with a strong emphasis on attention to detail and Proficient in all Microsoft Office packages
  • Numerical accuracy skills and good attention to detail
  • Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to prioritise effectively and work under tight deadlines
  • Strong data management and the ability to analyse data
  • A strong work ethic and proactive, problem solving attitude
